The smooth operation of this dynamic community event was made possible by funding received from the First Sovereign Trust.
The Northern Multi Ethnic Community Trust (NMECT) is a charitable not-for-profit association of ethnic people who collectively represent the diversity of their unique traditions, cultures and values that exist in the wider society. The NMECT exists to foster mutual appreciation and good relations between these traditions, cultures and values.
The Manukau Festival of Lights (Diwali) is one of the highlights of South Auckland’s cultural community calendar, and has been run annually since 2006. The grant makes it possible for the more than 50,000 people who enjoy the festival to attend for free, by contributing to operational costs such as venue and equipment hire, children’s activities and a fireworks display.
This important yearly event celebrates the richness of South Auckland by promoting diversity, family and cultural values, encouraging youth participation, and fostering community arts and creativity.
