New motors for sailing club’s motorboats make lessons safer and more cost effective, thanks to funding from NZCT.
About the Whanganui Sailing Club
Since 1999, the Whanganui Sailing Club has provided a junior sailing programme for Year 7 and 8 students from local intermediate schools. An average of around 320 students a year attend the sailing school at Pauri Lake.
What the funding went towards
A grant of $7,000 from NZCT allowed the club to buy two replacement outboard motors for their motorboats.
What this meant for the organisation
Treasurer Bob Davies says the single forward/back throttle control and electric start mechanism on the new motors mean for safer operation: “One of the risks that we face when teaching students to sail is from having the propeller in the water when students are swimming. We need to be able to turn off the motor when sailors are in the water and close to the motorboat, and the electric start will make this easier.”
Keeping the lessons affordable for as many people as possible is important to the club, and the new motors are more cost effective.
