Gymnasts from all over the Bay of Plenty can develop their skills in a safe environment thanks to funding from NZCT.
ARGOS was formed in 1991 by the amalgamation of four Bay of Plenty gymnastics clubs – Tauranga, Otumoetai, Te Puna and Mt Maunganui. ARGOS stands for Artistic, Rhythmic, General Organisation of Sports, and its mission is to provide a fun and friendly environment where members can develop not only their gymnastic abilities, but also general life skills.
The $45,000 grant from NZCT enabled ARGOS to install a new sprung floor, costing a total of $75,000. Thanks to the new floor, the club can guarantee a safe and well-equipped community facility that promotes gym as a way to stay active, learn new skills and build confidence.
Amy O'Neil, Centre Manager at ARGOS, says the new sprung floor is an essential part of all the gymnastics programmes, "As a not-for-profit club, we rely on grants from organisations like NZCT to assist with the purchase of new equipment to keep our fees affordable. Gymnasts only need their bodies, no shoes or equipment. As a club we are responsible for providing certified and safe equipment.”
ARGOS’ top class facilties provide a wider community benefit as well, with the venue hosting the annual Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools (NZAIMS) Games, where more than 400 athletes participate over four days and thousands of students attend as spectators. The new sprung floor meets the required size and specifications for this event.
