Kai Iwi School is a full primary school located approximately 10 km northwest of Whanganui, in the small rural community of Kai Iwi. It has strong community support and a high level of parent participation. The students enjoy regular experiences outside the classroom and across the wider district and have many opportunities to develop skills and build on their learning in the spacious and well-maintained school environment.
The school’s values were collaboratively developed with the community and are represented as respect, resilience and responsibility.
The $5,000 grant from NZCT allowed for the once leaking Kia Iwi School pool to be be relined with a fibreglass inner to prevent further cracks and leaking.
As is the case in many small townships, the Kai Iwi school pool is an important community facility, used regularly by students and local residents alike.
“It is such an important part of a country school to have a pool for our kids to learn to swim in, and for our community to come together during those hot, sunny weekends and holidays,”says Principal Ross Harvey.
