Families with children who have a serious illness are able to access free nursing and counselling services, thanks to funding of more than $320,000 from True Colours Charitable Trust.
True Colours provides nursing, grief and loss counselling to children with serious illnesses and their families in the Waikato region. Their services are free, and provided to the entire family, from the time of a child’s diagnosis through to bereavement, if required.
What the grant went towards
Funding from Grassroots Trust has enabled the True Colours Charitable Trust to meet their operational costs, and allowed them to maintain an essential service to seriously ill children and families in the Waikato region. As well as providing nursing, grief and loss counselling, the Trust provides opportunities for creative therapy for the children through music, art and play, and support and education services for the families. Moreover, each patient and his or her family have a key worker dedicated to ensuring their needs are met.
What this meant for the organisation and its members
True Colours is reliant on community funding to deliver services to children with complex health issues, and their families. The demand of caring for a child with high health needs has an impact on all areas of life – marital relationships, family dynamics and finances. The service provided by the Trust is often critical to the survival of the family unit concerned. True Colours is not government funded and 41% of their funding comes from Gaming Trusts.
