New regulations were developed without vital consultation with the sector

Back to list view

On 1 Dec new regulations for the Class 4 industry came into effect. These new regulations were developed under former Internal Affairs minister Jan Tinetti without vital consultation with the sector and are a continuation of the way the Government has treated those of us at the coal face of gambling harm. Because who better to identify potential harm than the people working in the venues? Many of the proposed regulations pay lip service to harm minimisation – or may cause more harm – and are decisions made by technocrats who have zero experience inside Class 4 venues.

Our sector wants strong regulation, effective gambling harm reduction and prevention mechanisms, and to be part of a recognised and valued ecosystem which gives so much back to the community. Our class four system in New Zealand is world-leading – nowhere else do you see more than a third of a billion dollars every year go into community initiatives which is provided by C4 funding. It’s unique and more importantly crucial to New Zealanders’ lives.
